Europe Road Trips

Rich cultural history, stunning architecture, the world’s finest art, delicious food and jaw dropping landscapes – Europe is unbeatable. It is the smallest continent in the world that is shared by 50 countries. Only in Europe will you be able to experience such variety within such proximity from one country to another.

Europe is a great country for road trips whether you want to focus on one country at a time or drive through Europe in one trip. All European countries are easy to get to thanks to fast and well-built motorways.

What is the best country for road trips in Europe

For road trip potential, France has to be my favourite because there are so many varied regions that have their own character. Bosnia is another spot for road trip lovers as it is great fun to drive around and landscapes are just incredible. Your country of choice for road trips will vary based on your personality, what you like to eat and the type of activities you are into, so any European country can be the best country for road trips.

What is the best way to travel Europe

Having your own car helps with being independent and not rely on public transport timetables. Whilst trains are fast and reliable, it is more useful to have a car to be able to drive to rural areas in Europe, and carry more comforts.

Things to know when driving in Europe

  • drive to the right, except in the UK

  • ensure your car is insured and has breakdown cover

  • be aware of toll collections – Tolls.eu has great information about toll collection and toll tunnels

  • you must carry a reflective jacket and a warning triangle in your boot in case of an accident

  • first aid kits are compulsory in France, Germany and Austria

  • always carry your ID document with you

Driving in the EU after Brexit

The UK stopped being a member of the European Union on 31 January 2020 with new driving rules that came into effect on 1 January 2021. What does it mean for UK drivers wanting to travel to Europe by car? An international driving permit might be required in some countries and specific documents will be required when travelling. Check the GOV.UK website for further information on driving abroad
