Africa Road Trips
Africa is a beautiful and diverse continent that has a total of 54 countries. It is famous for its beautiful sights, vast mountains and deserts, and impeccable coastline. Not to mention its huge catalogue of incredible wildlife. It’s the second largest and second most populated continent after Asia.
Africa has great potential for road trips because you can go off the beaten track and it feels like you can still explore and discover new things. It is such an underrated continent in comparison to Europe, Asia and the Americas due to unjust security risks, cultural and religious differences and perceived lack of infrastructure.
What countries to visit in Africa
I can only offer recommendations based on the countries I road tripped in Africa which are South Africa and Morocco. However, I have Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania in my list of countries to visit and hopefully road trip, too.
Can you drive through Africa
If you start your journey from Europe it is easy to enter Africa with your own car or van. You will need to drive all the way to Spain and get on a ferry to Morocco to be able to carry on your journey to Africa.
Is it safe to travel through Africa
The political climate changes regularly in Africa which can make it tricky to plan a safe and reliable route for a causal road trip. It’s best to check the government website of the country you want to visit ahead of departure.
Things to know when driving in Africa
mechanical knowledge is always a plus (you need to know how to change a wheel and watch temperatures in case your vehicle is overheating)
beware of potholes – road surfaces in Africa can be poor
avoid driving at night
have your ID documentation at all times as you’ll be stopped at checkpoints – fear not, everyone is really friendly
watch your speed and stay alert to the driving of others which can be dangerous and often ignore the rules
